witch do i choose? 42 tooth vs 56 tooth.... whats gonna be the difference?

i got a 200cc dirt bike.

56 tooth is much bigger in diameter, so would it take off faster or slower and have more or less power?

the bike will go about 55mph but gets there slowly.

whitch is better for the motor? the bigger 56 tooth is the original sprocket.

just want some good advice on witch one is better, thanks for the help.

  1. Do you really think that your riding skill is that good you are talking about a couple of teeth.

Funny, I've not heard of you.

  2. actually  on the rear 42 teeth will increase the ammount of available torquewhoever it will kill your top speed. you will notice that the front tire will come off the ground with much more snap if you grab a hand full of throttle. the 56 tooth will have a noticeable difference in torque but once you are off the line you will see a bit more top speed. all that said the smaller your front sprocket the more pronounced the changes will be. count the teeth on both the front and rear sprockets then divide the rear 42 or 56 by what ever the front one is mine is an 11 tooth. the bigger the number the more top end the smaller the number the more low end gurnt you will notice. and yes a difference of 14 teeth in very noticeable even to a novice rider. it is all about the ratios and since we are talking the final drive ratios you will feel then through every gear.

compared to the 56 tooth the 42 will make the bike feel like it has another gear below first.the 56 (compared to the 42)will make the bike feel like it starts in 2nd and has a 7th gear. note that this is only an approximation as I do not know the gear ratios within the transmission of your particular bike.

  3. the 56 tooth sprocket will give you more power during lower RPMs but sacrifice top speed.  The 42 tooth sprocket will increase top speed but sacrifice power in lower RPM ranges.

Since you state the bike will go 55 but get there slowly I suggest you stick with the larger sprocket and not sacrifice power.  Why would you need to faster on dirt?

  4. The bigger the diameter, the more power it will deliver through gears 1-3, but succeeding gears 4 - last will be affected giving you short speed on straights, but more power on uphills. Choosing the proper size also depends on what track you use your bike on.

  5. id run a 46 all becouse i have the same bike and i tried 42 it jumps to much and your gearing gets all weird so try the 46 or 48 no bigger then you cant climb hill and it gets of the line so slow it suck so go with the 46 or 48

  6. Well the smaller sproket will be quicker off the line, better in the dirt, and will get you to 55 mph in a shorter time ,that is if you dont hit the red line tach before getting there. The larger sproket is better for the motor because because it wont be reving as much. So it depends on what you will use the bike for more.More dirt then street riding smaller sproket, more street then dirt larger sproket. There should be alot more sproket sizes out there. You can also change your rear sproket giving you more to work with.Best of luck.
