Spurs fans shocker: Booing their team after Sunderland draw
Someone was spot on when he said that a week can be a long time in football. It was only seven days ago when Tottenham Hotspur fans witnessed arguably the greatest night in the history of their club as they tore European Champions Inter Milan to shreds.
On Tuesday night, their beloved Tottenham failed to beat a defiant Sunderland side and the club supporters booed their players of the pitch. Every player was left shell shocked, as to what was this all about?
Harry Redknapp was as surprised as anyone else was at the final whistle drama from spurs fans. During his press conference, the manager was disappointed but cleverly sarcastic in his view behind the booing by the spurs fans.
"Well they’ve had it so good over the years you see; they’ve had it so good here. They’ve been winning every week, kept winning league championships every year, so you get upset when you don’t win – it’s hard [on them],” said Harry.
Harry took over a team that was battling in the relegation zone not long ago. To turn them into a Champions League outfit and then be at the top of their table in the Champions League is worth booing, isn’t it?
And for your information this all has been done without the services of club captain Ledley King and Micheal Dawson, Tottenham’s first choice centre back pairing.
Last season’s top goal scorer, Jermaine Defoe and Aaron Lennon, who had the most number of assists, have also missed most of the matches this season.
Tottenham have not only been doing well in terms of results but in fact, they have put up some stellar displays.
Let’s get some perspective here; Liverpool at the moment have same points compared to Tottenham. They have hardly put up a memorable performance apart from the Chelsea win.
They are 9th in the table (below Spurs) and are at the top of the group in Europa League while Spurs are top of their Champions League group, which includes the likes of European Champions Inter Milan.
Ask any kid in England that which of the two clubs are bigger and whose fans should be looking for a lot more from their team. Even that kid would laugh at you for asking this question.
Yet Liverpool fans have shown patience with their utterly embarrassing manager.
We move on now. Yes, we agree that Tottenham were a force to reckon with in the 50s but the fans of those days will be hard to find. If you look at more recent history, there is nothing that makes you sit up and admire about this football club.
Since Harry took over, the time has changed and is probably a much better time to be a spurs fan now than it was in the previous few decades.
When was the last time Spurs team possessed a genuinely world class player, who everyone would talk about. In Gareth Bale, they have a gem of a player. The last player in that mould, to have played at White Hart Lane was Sol Campbell in mid 90s. Interestingly,
he deserted them to become an Arsenal legend. Could this also be attributed to the pressure from Spurs fans?
He is not the only superstar in this current spurs team. Rafael Van der Vaart and Luka Modric are certainly classy enough players to stake a claim in the starting line ups of most European giants.
Spurs have 4 quality strikers in Defoe, Crouch, Pavlyuchenko and Keane. None of them could be regarded a Torres or a Drogba but their classy midfield compensates for that.
This still is a huge improvement from previous years, if only spurs fans can remember the day when they signed Andy Booth on loan from Sheffield in 2001.
In Harry, they have a manager who knows what he is doing. In less than 2 years time, he has brought Champions League to White Hart Lane for the first time in 49 years.
Chairman Daniel Levy is a top drawer man who knows exactly what needs to be done and at what time. He did let go some key players such as Berbatov, Carrick and Robbie Keane (only to get the latter back after only 6 months with a net profit of 8 m pounds).
These sales returned healthy profits of nearly 50 m pounds. To further remind the Spurs fans that when they lost Sol Campbell, Jurgeon Klinsmann and Teddy Sheringham, they received a combined fee of 4.75 m pounds. This was under Lord Alan Sugar. Sorry Sir
but ‘You are fired’.
The club has made huge strides in the right direction under Manager Harry Redknapp and it would be better for them to support their manager. We know Harry won’t think twice if a big offer comes his way and he would be right to leave if the Spurs don’t oblige
him enough.
