Dutch international and AS Roma goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maarten-Stekelenburg-c22998 is the latest player Tottenham Hotspur are linked with.
The North London club have been in the hunt for a goalkeeper to replace current club number one and soon to retire American shot stopper, Brad Friedel.
Reports in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 suggest that Spurs are now targeting Stekelenburg as their prime target, and with the Dutch
international’s agent revealing that a host of clubs are interested in the 29-year old, his future in Italy looks uncertain.
Tottenham had previously been leading the chase for French international and Lyon goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hugo-Lloris-c16408. The club looked likely to land the French captain, but had been unsuccessful in their attempt to bring him to White Hart Lane. The club missed the deadline
set by Lyon’s president http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jean-c18112 Michel-Aulas, and as a result, failed to acquire his services.
Current first choice goalkeeper Brad Friedel is nearing retirement, and second choice goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlo-Cudicini-c8340 is also nearing the last years of his playing days. Tottenham are looking to replace both Friedel and Cudicini, who are 41 and 38-years old respectively,
as early as possible.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brad-Friedel-c7953 has expressed his intention of quitting top level football after this season, and admitted that this may be his last season in the Premier League. Speaking to the press this week, he said:
"How much more have I got? Let's get through this [season] first. I have a year left on my contract and at my age, it really does go year to year.”
"We'll see how things progress and at that point, I'll make a decision on my future," he added. "If I couldn't do it anymore at the highest level, then I wouldn't want to play. I wouldn't sign a contract."
Stekelenburg has now emerged as a primary target for Tottenham. The Dutch international moved to Italian club AS http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926, the player has been linked with a move away from
the club. More fuel was added to this speculation when his agent revealed that there had been enquiries made by several clubs for the Dutch player’s availability.
