Tottenham Hotspur have completed a £6 million surprise signing of Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey on the last day of the transfer window.
The North London club have made it a habit of signing quality players on the last day of the transfer season. Two years ago, the club signed Dutch playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart on deadline day from Spanish giants Real Madrid for a mere £10 million.
Now, the club has completed the signing of another quality player on deadline day. This news surprised many as there had been no reports linking the Fulham ace with a move to North London.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/United-States-c3034 international signed a three-year contract at White Hart Lane yesterday after having rejected a move to Aston Villa. The 29-year old arrived at Tottenham’s training facilities yesterday to finalise personal terms with the club, and put
pen to paper after completing a medical.
The player had previously been strongly linked with a move to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809, with many reports claiming that the Merseyside club was his personal preference. However, Fulham had been adamant on not letting their star player leave for Anfield.
Next, the player was linked with a move to Aston Villa, but he rejected the Birmingham club. Dempsey still wanted out of Craven Cottage, and it is understood that Fulham manager Martin Jol had been forced to make the player train in isolation for the greater
part of pre-season.
Liverpool had not been secretive in their desire to land the American, and had publicly expressed their interest in him. The club had been involved in negotiations with Fulham and had inquired about his price in the final days of the transfer season.
Other reports in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 suggest that Fulham had also been locked in talks with Aston Villa and had reportedly agreed a move for the American midfielder which would cost Liverpool £5 million plus £2 million in add-ons.
The move to Tottenham comes as a complete surprise as it came from nowhere. Spurs have indeed signed a quality midfielder to make up for the loss of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857, who was recently sold to Spanish giants Real Madrid this week.
