Spyridon Gianniotis occupies Men’s 10km gold medal – Marathon Swimming World Cup 2012, Santos
Spyridon Gianniotis of Greece impressed his supporters by occupying gold medal of Men’s 10km swim at the 2012 Marathon Swimming World Cup in Santos, Brazil on Sunday, January 29.
Brazil is the initial stage of eight-stop Marathon Cup, which is organised by the international aquatic sports managing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
The 31-year-old Gianniotis remained considerably faster from his competitors all the way through 10km discipline. He experienced a strong contest from Nicola Bolzonello of Italy and Richard Weinberger of Canada in the first race of the season but he proved his mettle by securing the top spot in the event.
He followed the lead of 24-year-old Bolzonello in the start, but with his frenzy efforts, Gianniotis overpowered his competitors and remained at a prominent distance throughout the race.
Previously, he won a gold medal in the 10km swim and a silver medal in the 5km race at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai. He was also the silver medallist of 5km event at the 2009 Rome World Championships while pocketed a bronze medal in the same at the 2007 world titles in Melbourne.
He also obtained a gold medal in the 5km team event and a silver finish in the individual 5km race at the 2010 European Championships in Budapest.
With his unimaginable efforts, Gianniotis defended his title by completing his race in a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 39.51 seconds. He was trailed by Bolzonello, who stayed almost two seconds slower from the champion and ended his swim in a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 41.44 seconds for silver medal.
Subsequently, the spectators witnessed a wonderful effort of Weinberger, who was just 0.90 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and emerged on the finishing line for third position by reporting a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 42.34 seconds.
The event ended after the completion of 10km swim in Men’s and Women’s category whereas the podium finishers received their medals at the medal ceremony of the championship.
In addition, the next stage of Marathon Series is scheduled at Viedma, Argentina on Saturday, February 4.
