Spyros Gianniotis wins Men’s 10km Open Water swimming title: Day two - 2011 FINA World Championships
Day two of the 2011 FINA World Championships began in stunning fashion with the performance of Spyros Gianniotis in the Open Water Swimming meet. The event is being held in Shanghai, China, on Wednesday, July 20.
The session of the meet conducted the Men’s 10km Open Water swim. In the corresponding race, Spyros Gianniotis of Greece took home the gold medal with a winning time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 24.7 seconds. After winning the gold title in the corresponding
swim, the athlete from Greece was pleased with his individual performance at the World Championships.
Meanwhile, Lurz Thomas of Germany secured the silver medal with a sterling time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 27.2 seconds, while Bolshakov Sergey of Russia grabbed the bronze title in a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 31.8 seconds.
In the respective meet, Alex Meyer of United States captured the fourth spot in a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 33.1 seconds, whereas, Ky Hurst of Australia earned fifth place honours with a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 33.9 seconds.
Hervas Francisco of Spain wound up sixth in a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 34.3 seconds, while Brian Ryckeman of Belgian was placed seventh in 1 hour, 54 minutes and 36.1 seconds. Julien Sauvage of France secured the eighth place with a time of 1 hour,
54 minutes and 37.2 seconds. In the meantime, Vladimir Dyatchin of Russian finished ninth in a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 38.7 seconds. Andreas Waschburger of Germany earned the tenth spot after he ended his swim in 1 hour, 54 minutes and 39.8 seconds.
The top-ten swimmers in the Men’s 10km Open Water swim competition qualified for next year Olympics, in London. Great Britain’s Dan Fogg finished fifteenth and was not able to qualify for the event in 2012. After the race, Fogg said, “I just kept my head
down throughout the race and tried to get as highly placed as possible and get that Olympic qualification.”
On the other hand, Tom Allen of Great Britain was also unable to make a strong impression in the following race, as he finished at the 26th position.
