Squad of nine athletes to represent Estonia at the IAAF World Athletics Championships: Athletics news
With the IAAF World championships in Athletics just around the corner, squads are already leaving for Daegu to take part in the mega athletics event and Estonia too, has decided to finalise its contingent for the tournament, which is comprised of nine athletes.
The World Championships, which will kick-off from August 27 of this ongoing month, will be seeing the Estonian squad being lead by the experienced Discus Throw and the defending world champion, Gerd Kanter.
Kanter, the 32-year-old veteran athlete, who had initiated with his international career back in 2004, could only mark a breakthrough in 2005 where he bagged a silver medal at the World Championships and at the World Athletics Final. This was the point which
opened the doors of his success and beyond this point, all what he did was to dominate one or the other field with his formidable performance.
Besides Kanter, the athlete from whom the Estonian nation will have high hopes of bagging a medal is Mikk Pahapill, the 2009 European Indoor Heptathlon champion. He has long been striving to put up his best performance at the Decathlon meet in Daegu, the
discipline he specialises in. Joining him on the track will be his fellow countryman, Andreas Raja.
The focus of this small contingent for bagging a medal for the homeland will be on performing on its stronghold, and that is Discus throw. Perhaps, that is the reason that Besides Kanter, another athlete representing Estonia in the discipline will be Mart
Israel. Israel, the 27-year-old athlete boasts of a personal best of 66.98 seconds.
Marek Niit will represent the country in sprints competitions, which are one of the most entertaining disciplines of athletic competitions in Daegu. The runner also alone set ten new national records in the ongoing year. At Daegu, the runner will contest
in 100m and 200m events. In Javelin Throw, Estonia will be represented by Mihkel Kukk.
A relatively smaller group of women athletes representing the small country at the World Championships will comprise of Maris Magi, who is supposed to compete in the 400m race. Anna Iljustsenko, the national record holder in High Jump and Grit Sadeiko, the
current European U-23 champion in Heptathlon competitions will also take part in the event.
