I own a 2002 Ford Ranger and recently a belt located in between the radiator and the engine started to squeak, I need to know what the name of this belt is so that I can research a price locally.

  1. the serpentine belt.  could also be a 2.3 or 2.5 L 4 cyl.

    check it or have it checked first.  sometimes belts squeak b/c they are dry, have dust on them.  some car parts stores have a spray for that...

    also, a squeak can mean a pulley is out of line which generally means that whatever auxillary system it is on is going out.

  2. Could be an alternator belt or serpentine belt, is it worn? It may not need replaced see if it is loose or try some spraying it with belt dressing and see if that helps.

  3. Kevin;

    The belt you are referring to is the serpentine belt which drives all of your engine accessories. To replace it you first need to know which engine you have in your ranger. Is it the 3.0 liter V-6 or the 4.0 liter V-6? Your owners manual will tell you. Once you know that, any auto parts store will be able to quote you prices on replacements. One piece of advice is to stick with the Ford belt. I replaced mine with another type and even though it worked fine it whined more than the stock belt. To replace the belt, the only tool you need is a 3/8" drive socket wrench. Note that you don't need any actual sockets to go with the wrench since the socket drive fits right into the belt tensioner. Refer to the diagram under your hood in front of your radiator for the belt routing and instructions on loosening the belt tensioner and you can replace the belt yourself. Save the old belt for an emergency in case you ever break one. Good luck.
