Squeaky Rear Drum Brakes; How To Fix?

by  |  earlier

2000 Celica, All I can tell is it is a high pitch squeal when coming to a stop. I have full braking and it does not seem to be worn out at all from the feel of it,

Can they be taken apart to be cleaned?

How to Clean / Stop it?

Tried brake cleaner on disk brakes, and does not help. Getin tired of the crappy car sound, when mine looks anything but crappy.

  1. Hey, I've got cheap cars and really expensive cars. Brakes squeak on them all. If you're sure it's the drums, you need to pull the drums off and spray them with Brake Clean. It comes in a red can. Don't use compressed air and breath the dust. It'll kill ya. Finally, clean the brake shoes also with the Brake Clean. Don't touch the shoes with your grubby mitts either. Just spray them. That will last a while, but the squeal will be back. Are you sure it's not the front brakes? You can spray them with brake clean as well. You don't need to disassemble them. Just spray the bejesus out of them. There are products that help eliminate disk brake noise, but I would wait until I need the pads changes and the rotors cut.

  2. blow all the dirt out of the brakes and drums and there are like 3 or 4 spots behind each pad on the backing plate that the brakes rub on, you need to put a little grease on these spots in back of the pads , when you have that done take and sand your brake pads some and then do the same on the inside of the drum.

  3. p brake pads wore out and or main pads

    replace

in some cases its a wheel bearing but not often

  4. it,s probably dirt and rust. pull the drum off and spray some brake cleaner on the brakes and inside the drum.take a big screwdriver and put it between the backing plate and drum, then hit the drum with a hammer to loosen the drum.if it won,t come off, adjust the brake shoes away from the drum.

  5. replace the pads and have the rotors turned. use good quality pads
