Question:

Squid/Octopus Eggs??

Hello All,

I live in Penzance and the other day me and a couple of friends were walking the dog on the beach, and having a little paddle when we noticed what we thought was an odd sort of seaweed! It looked a bit like a pine cone/bunch of grapes.it was black and about the size of a fist.

Curiosity got the better of us and my friend picked up a sharpe rock and burst one of the (what i can only describe as) grapes and a tiny transluscent squid shaped embryo type thing popped out and started drowning in the air.

I've tried to google it but with no results.

Does anybody know what it was??

Cheers

  1. If they really were grape shaped, they were more likely ocotpus eggs.  Squid eggs are oblong, more bullet-shaped.  If they were dark colored, then they were really well developed.  When newly laid the egg masses are white or ivory colored.

If you want to know species, that's tough.  I'm not familiar enough with octopus species around England and without at least a photo, it would be too difficult to tell anyway.
