Sri Lanka Cricket Tournament Committee chairman Ravi de Silva has resigned along with another official, Ashley Ratnayake.
Although the actual reasons for these actions of the officials are still unknown, but media reports have revealed that de Silva in his resignation letter has mentioned that he wanted to give more time to his professional commitments.
Sri Lanka Cricket has now appointed Gihan Weerasinghe as the new Chairman of the Tournament Committee in de Silva’s place. Weerasinghe is the brother of Sri Lanka spin coach Oshadee Weerasinghe and was previously working as the Secretary of the Committee.
Media reports revealed that there had been many controversies going on in the Tournament Committee. It is expected that more reasons behind the resignations will surface in the days to come.
Sources have also unveiled that Ratnayake had actually resigned during the ICC World Cup 2011, but his resignation was kept secret and was later rejected.
One of the SLC officials while talking to the media told that Ratnayake has mentioned the reasons for stepping down from his post but has not revealed them officially in a written statement.
There are speculations that the resignations came because of immense interference of the top officials in the matters of Tournament Committee affairs and as a result, they could not perform their duties independently.
Cricket Sri Lanka has been going through many controversies since the ICC World Cup 2011 ended. Skipper Kumar Sangakkara stepped down from his post after which the vice-captain Mahela Jayawardene also resigned. Not only this, SLC selection committee led
by Aravinda de Silva also decided to call it a day soon after.
Following this, the SLC had to face some controversies with the Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, as they intended to call back their players from the ongoing Indian Premier League early in order to prepare the team for the tour of England scheduled
for May 26, 2011. However, the issue was resolved later with mutual consultation of the two boards.
Recently, former Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne said that match-fixing had been prevalent in Sri Lanka cricket since 1992 and he could name many big players involved in it.
With so much happening around Sri Lanka cricket these days, let’s hope the team manages to keep its focus on their upcoming tour of England.
