Marians Cricket Club 160 v Sinhalese Sports Club 166 - Sinhalese Sports Club won by 6 wickets (with 41 balls remaining)
In the ongoing Sri Lankan domestic Premier Limited Over Tournament, Sinhalese Sports Club won the second semi-final by six wickets against Chilaw Marians Cricket Club on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground, Colombo.
After winning the toss, Sinhalese chose to field first in a bid to restrict their opponents on a meagre tally.
The plan worked like a charm, as they managed to grab three Marians wickets on two runs. This was a sensational bowling attack by Sinhalese, as they made their first breakthrough on the penultimate delivery of the first over of the innings.
The early loss of three crucial wickets, put Marians under tremendous pressure as they could no longer launch a batting onslaught and had to fight a war for survival in the remaining overs.
In such a situation, the batting side could not take any risks, which aided Sinhalese bowlers in tightening the screws around the batting side.
With 24 runs on the board, Marians lost their fourth wicket when opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Weeratunga-Arachchilage-Suresh-Niroshan-c96442, was dismissed after playing an innings of 12 runs.
It was then a face saving innings by middle-order batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wijekoon-Mudiyanselage-Gayan-Ramyakumara-c96541, who desperately tried to stay on the wicket for as long as possible.
The two batsmen clobbered 55 runs together and later lost their wickets after amassing 43 and 47 runs. In the end, the side could only post 160 runs in 47.2 overs.
From Sinhalese, spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sachithra-Madushanka-Senanayake-c87813 incinerated the Marians batting line-up by grabbing five wickets.
Later, coming out to bat, Sinhalese had an easy target at hand and needed to bat sensibly in order to win the crucial semi-final.
Sinhalese also had a disastrous start to their innings, as they lost their first wicket without a run on the board.
However, the middle-order batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kaushal-Samaraweera-Lokuarachchi-c70496 (59) hammered their side to victory as the team reached the required target in 43.1 overs.
