After the allegations of spot-fixing aired by Hashan Tillakaratne, former skipper of the Sri Lankan cricket team, the Lankan government have initiated police investigation into the matter.
Tillakaratne, who had played 200 ODIs and 83 Test matches during his career that stretched over 15 years, said last week that most of the Lankan players had been into match-fixing activities since 1992 and was can also name a few of them.
Responding to the charges leveled by the former skipper, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the minister for sports, informed the reporters after a meeting with the cricketing authorities, “I have asked the inspector-general of police to investigate these claims
and give a report to me”.
Tillakaratne, Lankan skipper from April 2003 to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/March-c74391 2004, said that he was not sure whether the team selection for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 was fair.
Appearing into the world cup final, Sri Lanka lost the cup to the Indian rivals last month.
While talking to a Sri Lankan daily newspaper on Friday, Tillakaratne expressed his views that match-fixing was something prevalent in Sri Lanka’s cricket for quite some time and it had damaged the cricketing structure of the country like cancer.
He said, “There were threats of this issue being exposed at various times. But it was pushed down by giving money to various people. If the people who were responsible for that are listening to this, I state this today with greater responsibility, I will
shortly reveal the names of those responsible”.
Responding to the charges leveled by the former skipper, Kumar Sangakkara, the world cup skipper of the Sri Lankan cricket team asked him to prove his allegations.
Sangakkara was of the view that Hashan had played international cricket for several years and he had led the team as well so it was interesting to see what he had to share with the people. In his view, the former skipper did not have anything to share except
leveling baseless allegations.
Concluding his remarks, the world cup skipper said that if there was any basis to the claims made by Tillakaratne, he should share them either with the International Cricket Council (ICC) or with the Lankan cricket authorities so that the evil of spot-fixing
could be rooted out from the Sri Lankan cricket for good.
