Sri Lanka bans ICC 2011 World Cup song with “insulting” lyrics against Australia and New Zealand
Sri Lanka decided to impose an indefinite ban on a song that was released for the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011 in the Subcontinent.
The Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapakse, ordered the authorities to ban the song as it contained some “insulting” lyrics about Australia and New Zealand.
A Sri Lankan official stated that the President was put off by the wordings of the song and could not understand how the song even got the clearance to be a part of cricket’s biggest extravaganza.
“The President was appalled that the song was allowed in the first place”, the official was quoted as saying.
He added that the President took notice of the song when he turned up to watch his country play their opening match of Group A on Sunday at Hambantota against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 eventually won by 210 runs. A video clip of the song was being played in the stadium before the match began and in between the drinks break.
“He felt the song was in poor taste. What he wants is a song to inspire the team and fans and not insult other nations”, the official concluded.
The song, which is made by a private company that is sponsoring the team, is in the official language of Sri Lanka and the video of the song was getting heavy air-play on state-run and private television channels as well as state-run radio channels.
The song contained lyrics about the four time World Cup champions, comparing them with bird food. The singers warn in the song that Ricky Ponting and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 will be eaten up by their country as they are like “bird food”.
The song that is in Sinhalese and Tamil languages also claims that the Sri Lankans will break the jaws of the players from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754.
The President especially condemned the lyrics that were targeted against the Black Caps as the country was recently hit by a devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the south island of New Zealand, Christchurch.
The official also stated that the President has also issued notices to the sports authorities, who allowed the song to be played, during the match.
Sri Lanka, who is co-hosting the event along with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747, has also taken measures to ban musical instruments in the stadium so as to minimize noise pollution.
