Sri Lanka cricket gets new national selection committee – Cricket news
Sri Lanka cricket has finally appointed its new national selection committee for the national side.
The five-member selection committee was announced by sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
According to details, the national selection committee will be headed by Duleep Mendis who was named as chairman of the selection committee. The remaining members of the selection committee include Brendon Kuruppu, Don Arunasiri, Ranjith Madurasinghe and
Chaminda Mendis.
While talking to the press, Duleep insisted that long-term and short-term strategies will be formulated by the selection committee keeping the ICC World Cup 2015 as their prime target.
Meanwhile, the sports minister rubbished the rumours of any political involvement in the cricket structure of the country. He clarified that that all the appointments made in the selection committee were based on merit and the Government of Sri Lanka was
not controlling the Sri Lanka Cricket.
Recently, the outgoing coach of Sri Lanka Trevor Bayliss had revealed too much political interference in the team which was harming cricket in Sri Lanka. He praised the Sri Lankan players for giving a commendable performance despite so many unwanted distractions.
As of now, the SLC has appointed Bayliss’ deputy Stuart Law as an interim coach for the national team, who will be with the national side during the tour of England. A permanent coach will be named later.
The last week was extremely stressful for cricket authorities in Sri Lanka, as the skipper Kumar Sangakkara resigned from his post, followed by the resignations of vice-captain Mahela Jayawardene and the Aravinda de Silva-led selection committee.
With the England tour coming up, it was imperative for the SLC to name a new selection committee and a new skipper for the national team as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, former skipper Sangakkara insisted that the new selection committee should appoint a long-term skipper to ensure consistency in the national side.

Sangakkara was heavily criticised back home for not being aggressive enough in the final. He was bashed for not playing Sri Lanka’s spin wizard http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ajantha-c42419 Mendis in the final.
Sri Lanka’s spin department will also be without their ever-reliable http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Muttiah-Muralitharan-c78157, who announced his retirement from international cricket after the World Cup.
