Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) selectors on Thursday named their final squad for next month’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 U-19 Cricket World Cup. The SLC selectors kept faith in the 15-man squad that played in last month’s Under-19 Asia Cup, in Kuala Lumpur,
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 by six wickets.
Medium pace bowler Sanitha de Mel has also been retained as the captain of the side, after his impressive leadership skills during the Asia Cup. Right-handed middle order batsman Angelo Jayasinghe will be the vice captain of
the side on the tour.
The ninth edition of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup gets underway in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 on August 11, and will run till August 26. Total 16 teams will contest in the esteemed Youth tournament. The teams have been divided
into four groups of four teams each. Sri Lanka have been drafted in Group D in the World Cup, alongside http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Namibia-c2964. The Islanders will play their tournament opener against subcontinent rivals, Bangladesh at Brisbane,
on August 11.
Hosts Australia will defend title they had claimed in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754, in 2010. A victory at home will not only hand them their fourth U-19 World Champ title, but will also allow them to match Pakistan’s record of winning back-to-back
titles.
The Men in Green won the 2004 and 2006 editions in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively. India has also won the tournament twice, but with a gap of six years, in 2000 in Sri Lanka and in 2008 in Malaysia. Sri Lanka are, however,
yet to win a title.
All the 16 participating boards have named their teams, as they are bound to submit their final squads with the ICC Under 19 World Cup organizing committee 30 days prior to the first match of the competition.
