Sri Lanka defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the second One Day International (ODI) of the three-match series played at Colombo. The hosts lead the series 1-0 with one more match remaining.
West Indies only managed to score 203 runs in their innings and were all-out. The hosts yet again suffered a delay in the match because of rain but eventually managed to win by eight wickets through the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method.
Chris Gayle and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Barath-c42094 were unable to get the visitors off to a good start. Barath was dismissed after scoring 12 runs whereas Gayle only managed 28. Ramnaresh Sarwan was looking good on his return to cricket after a long lay-off, before he misjudged
a single and was run-out after scoring just 21 runs.
This saw brothers, Darren Bravo and Dwayne Bravo, come together at the crease. Both the Bravos top-scored in the innings with 39 runs each but failed to carry onto the starts they got. With wickets falling regularly, the team was in deep trouble, but wicketkeeper
batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Carlton-Baugh-c49264 made sure that the visitors batted-out their allotted fifty overs and scored as many runs as possible. Baugh remained unbeaten on 28 at the end of the innings.
Lasith Malinga took three wickets for his team and looked menacing with the new ball. He got good support from Nuwan Kulasekara and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Muttiah-Muralitharan-c78157, who both took two wickets in the match for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka lost their flamboyant opener, Tilakaratne Dilshan early after he scored 11 runs. The match came to a halt in the 15th over when it started to rain. However, it didn’t last long and the skies soon cleared, fortunately for the hosts.
The target was revised to 199 in 47 overs and Sangakkara got out after play resumed, after scoring 20 runs from 43 balls. However, opening batsman Upul Tharanga didn’t lose focus at all and scored a brilliant century to guide his team to victory. He remained
unbeaten on 101 off 143 balls and was named as the player-of-the-match.
Mahela Jayawardene also chipped in with some crucial runs and remained unbeaten on 48 off 46 balls. Ravi Rampaul and Dwayne Bravo were the only bowlers to take wickets for the visitors. Both teams will face each-other on 6th February in the last
match of the series.
The fans will be hoping to see at least one match of the series without any rain. Rain has affected all matches of the Test and ODI series between both the teams.
