Sri Lanka recall Farveez Maharoof for the first test against England – Cricket update
Sri Lanka have recalled right arm medium-fast bowler, Farveez Maharoof, as a cover into their squad for the first test against England starting on the 26th of May in Cardiff.
The bowler was not originally selected in the squad but he has been in England playing for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lancashire-c806 Cricket County as an overseas player for the 2011 season. Despite not being originally selected, Maharoof featured in Sril Lanka’s
opening tour match as some of the selected players were unavailable due to their participation in the Indian Premier League.
Maharoof has been recalled as a replacement for fast bowler Dilhara Fernando as he has been struggling with a knee problem.
Although the pacer played through pain in the opening tour match and took three wickets against the England Lions over the weekend, the tour management is not taking any risks on the fitness of the player and have recalled Maharoof
instead.
If Dilhara Fernando fails to recover from his knee injury for the match it will be a severe blow to the Lankan Lions as they are already without their talismanic fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who has retired from test cricket to prolong
his One Day International (ODI) career.
Farveez, an experienced player, with 20 tests and 94 ODIs under his belt will be a worthwhile addition to the Lankan pace attack in the tricky English conditions.
The Lankan bowling line up for this series is relatively inexperienced as the other two pacers, left-armer Chanaka Welegedara with six and Suranga Lakmal with two have only played eight test matches between them. Nuwan Pradeep is still
awaiting his first test cap.
A http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 spokesman said, "Maharoof has been called up and is already with us. He will be cover for one or two nagging injuries which we will be assessing."
After making his test debut in 2004, Farveez has not played in a test match since 2007.
