Sri Lanka 294 vs Australia 342/6 – Australia lead by 48 runs
Australia are in a commanding position against Sri Lanka after ending the second day of play in the third Test by posting 342 runs for the loss of six wickets at Sydney Cricket Ground.
After bowling-out the Sri Lankans for 294 by the end of the opening day, the Australians were aiming to stamp their authority on Friday by dominating their rivals.
The hosts had a modest start to their innings with openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DA-Warner-c1301 and EJM Cowan crafting a stand of 36 runs.
This partnership met its end on the wicket of EJM Cowan, who crumbled on a run out after scoring only four runs off nine deliveries.
However, the arrival of PJ Hughes brought stability in the innings as he forged a potent partnership alongside Warner, leading his side towards 166, before the partnership met its end on the wicket of the opener, who perished with 85 runs to his name.
Hughes was then the next to hit the showers, as he found his way back to the pavilion after losing his wicket to Herath. The batsman had played an impressive knock of 87 runs before walking off.
Skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MEK-Hussey-c1942 then initiated a rebuild phase, as it was now imperative for Australia to retain their wickets instead of going after the batsmen.
While http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clark-c51118 played a dominating role in this partnership, Hussey was unlucky in the final match of his career as he fell after scoring only 25 runs, leaving his side struggling on 251.
The Aussie skipper was then joined by MS Wade, but this partnership was short-lived as the captain was dismissed by Herath after belting a commendable 50-run knock. By this time, the home side had reached 271 runs.
MS Wade and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MG-Johnson-c1945 struggled against the fielding side, as this partnership could only take the score to 307, before the latter faltered after scoring only 13 runs off 38 deliveries.
With six wickets down, it was imperative for Wade and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PM-Siddle-c2197 to stay on till stumps.
Later, Wade stayed unbeaten on 47 and Siddle on 16 by the end of the day.
