The Sri Lanka cricket team management has called up all-rounder Farveez Maharoof as a stand up for the injured fast bowler, Dilhara Fernando ahead of their opening Test of the three-match series against England starting in Cardiff on Thursday, 26th
of May.
The SLC (Si Lanka Cricket)  media manager, Mr. Brian Thomas confirmed on Tuesday that the pacer will not be available for the first Test so they have called up Maharoof as stand by.
"Dilhara's got a nagging knee injury and the team has taken precautionary measures (by calling up Maharoof)," Thomas said while talking to the media reporters in Colombo today.
The Colombo pacer picked up three wickets in six deliveries to help his side win the four-day tour game against England http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 in Derby on Sunday.
Maharoof, the 26-year-old right arm medium, who has himself been hit by a spate of injury over the past few months, has not played a Test match since November 2007. His last appearance in a five-dayer was against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in Hobart.
The all-rounder, who plays for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 without most of the senior players, as
half a dozen of seasoned Lanka players, including former captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397, were away playing in the lucrative Indian Premier League, which is in the last stages these days.
The 31-year-old Fernando has been given a task of spearhead the Lankan attack in  the absence of experienced bowlers like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SL-Malinga-c2540 – both of whom have said farewell to the Test cricket.
Legendary spinner, Muralitharan had retired from the Test cricket last year in July while the Galle pacer, who is famous for his slinging round-arm bowling action, decided to leave the longest form of cricket last month citing his recurring knee injury.
Besides three Test matches, the visitors are scheduled to play a five-match ODI series and a one-off  Twenty20 International as well during the summer tour of England.
