Sri Lankan head coach Geoff Miller has agreed that the performance of bowlers in South Africa’s first innings of the ongoing third and last Test against South Africa was quite disappointing, however he hoped of a comeback on the basis of a good show with
the bat.

South Africa rode on Jacques Kallis’ astounding 224 to set a colossal total of 580 for 4 declare in the first innings of the ongoing third Test underway at Newlands, Cape Town since Tuesday January 3, 2011. Kallis’ efforts were well complemented by centurions
Alviro Petersen (109 off 188) and AB de Villiers (160 not out).

Though a comprehensive South Africa victory is the favourite outcome, Marsh hoped if the batsmen could manage to get past the follow on then they would be in a position to avoid a defeat.

"If we bat well we are capable of making big scores," said the Lankan coach while speaking to the media reporters at the day end press conference on Wednesday. "If we can get past the follow-on, the game opens up a bit," he hoped.

Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan had won the toss and surprised everybody after putting the hosts to bat. Replying to a query regarding Dilshan’s decision to send South Africa in, Marsh said that it was a captain’s decision, however he did opine that
the skipper had full support of everybody.

The visiting coach rued that if the side had capitalized on the opportunities offered by the South Africa batsmen, especially double centurion Jacques Kallis, it could have been a different ball game.

"We spoke about it before the game. We were a little unsure, to be honest, but the captain made that decision and he had the full support of everybody,” the coach elaborated.

"Had we taken our opportunities, it would have been a good decision. We had a chance to get Kallis before he scored but we let it slip" an apparently disappointed Marsh added further.

Chasing South Africa’s monumental first innings total of 580 runs, the tourists were reeling at 219 for 7 at lunch on Day three.
