Australia after ending the first day of the second Test against hosts Sri Lanka on 60 runs without the loss of any wicket started the second day of the match at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium aiming to boost their total in order to put the home
side under pressure.
Meanwhile, having posted only 174 runs in their first innings the Lankans knew that they would have to grab the Australian wickets early on to prevent them from controlling the game in the remaining days.
The Lankan bowlers were up to speed as they sent the dangerous Watson back to the pavilion without allowing him to add a run in his overnight tally of 36 as he was clean bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326’s
wicket without having added a run to their overnight score.
The wicket of Watson brought http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phillip-Hughes-c2185.
The Australian batsmen looked extremely comfortable while batting against the opposition as they played impressive shots all around the park, giving the spectators plenty to cheer about.
After putting 35 runs together in the second wicket partnership, Hughes was caught by Paranavitana at short-leg off the bowling of Suraj Randiv after he had scored 36 runs off 116 deliveries. At the time of his departure the Aussies had posted 95 runs on
the board for the loss of two wickets.
The wicket of Hughes was an obvious loss for the tourists as they would have liked him to bat for a longer period of time in order to enforce dominance on the Sri Lankans.
Nonetheless, this wicket brought the Australian skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Simon-James-Marshall-c90362.
While the number three batsman did bulk of the scoring it was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 who stood fast at the other end, however, his innings fell short in the 44th over when after playing a knock of 13 runs off 20 deliveries he was caught by former Vice captain
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397 at second slip off the bowling of Welegedara. At the time of his demise the side had managed to post 116 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets.
It was then time for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MEK-Hussey-c1942 to take the field and after having a bad patch, today turned out to be his lucky day as he looked in supreme form and back to his best.
The batsman exhibited good footwork and excellent timing as he played against the raging Sri Lankan bowling attack.
The two batsmen became a force to reckon with as they prevented the Sri Lankans from taking anymore wickets in the day.
At stumps Marsh was batting on 87 runs while Hussey was unbeaten on 76 runs as the Aussies posted 264 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets.
