After a series of failures, the Sri Lankan batting order finally clicked to remain in a strong position at the close of Day 3 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, in the Test match being played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo on September 18, 2011.
At stumps, the hosts made 428 for the loss of six wickets, an overall lead of 112, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913 still unbeaten on 85.
The Sri Lankans started the day with the supreme duo of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397 occupying the crease on 61 and 31 respectively.
Both looked in good touch, dominating the first hour, playing some elegant shots. However, Jayawardene fell shortly afterwards, edging one off http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BJ-Haddin-c1170, soon after he brought his half-century.
That spurred the visitors, who then struck again, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PM-Siddle-c2197 removing the dangerous Sangakkara to have the hosts 4 down at the score of 210.
However, skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hashan-Prasantha-Tillakaratne-c62021.
Dilshan especially, looked much more assured while coming down the order, as clobbered the bowling all-round the park. The pitch now offered little to the bowlers, who found it hard to extract any sort of movement.
Despite being a flamboyant hitter himself, Mathews showed resilience, lending an able, supporting hand to the skipper. It has been an excellent series for the 24-year-old, showing the determination to succeed in the longer version of game.
The skipper brought up a deserved half-century, punching spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377; however, Dilshan treated the former skipper with a crunching pull shot followed
by another bulging off-drive.
With the Lankan skipper set to reach to the three figure mark, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Trent-Copeland-c2709 came to his demise. The youngster kept on probing at the off-stump and was rewarded when Dilshan, on 83, decided to glance him through the third man area, only to get a healthy
edge to Haddin, which the keeper luckily pounced, standing up to the stumps.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/HAPW-Jayawardene-c1529 then batted alongside Mathews, with the two putting a solid 81-run partnership, moving the total past the 400 mark.
Prasanna managed to make an impressive impact in his 47-run knock, hitting Lyon for 2 huge sixes before being held nicely by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 at mid-wicket, off Copeland.
Mathews however, was determined to play out the day and so he did, remaining unbeaten on 85 with debutant http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ranaweera-Mudiyanselage-Shaminda-Eranga-c83939 partnering him on 5.
So at the final time of asking, the Sri Lankan batting order clicked with the middle-order, all contributing with half-centuries. The 4th Day looks set to be an enthralling battle.
