India 294/7 (50/50 ov) v Sri Lanka 274 (45.4) - India won by 20 runs
India climbed to number-two spot in the ODI format on Saturday, by claiming victory in the five-match series finale against hosts Sri Lanka, at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
With India taking three medals in the ongoing Olympics, the match was overshadowed in that part of the world, however, Dhoni XI had their eyes on the top spot in the limited overs format.
Sri Lanka had already lost the series to the Indians and were playing for pride, however, India had other plans, seeking their third successive victory in the tournament.
Winning the series by 4-1, team India have shown that they are going to be a tough side to beat in the forthcoming World T20 in Sri Lanka.
After winning the toss and hammering a decent total of 294 runs thanks to an 88-run knock by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Irfan-Pathan-c1601, who bagged the Player of the Match award on taking five wickets.
“God's grace. Was bowling well throughout the series. Had too many bad deliveries today but got five wickets. The batting gave me a lot of confidence, it came at the right time, in Premadasa and here,” said Pathan.
Earlier, Sri Lanka’s run chase had a decent start with openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691 forging a stand of 13 runs.
Dilshan was the first wicket to fall, perishing in front of Pathan without scoring a run. With the hard-hitting batsman back in the pavilion, it was time for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/HDRL-Thirimanne-c1542 to come in the centre.
The Lankans then suffered the demise of their second wicket at a time when they had amassed a total of 61 runs on the board, as Tharanga perished after scoring 31 runs.
Wicketkeeper/batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LD-Chandimal-c1831, was the next to fall, as the batsman could muster only eight runs.
Stand-in skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913, failed to yield a big innings, finding his way off the field after scoring 13 runs.
From Sri Lanka, Thirimanne and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BMAJ-Mendis-c1175 were the only success stories for belting 77 and 72 runs, while the rest of the batting unit failed to cope with the Indian onslaught.
