Among New Zealand’s most experienced pacers and a useful all-rounder, Jacob Oram retired from Test cricket in 2009, and has since then gone on to rack up a substantial amount of experience in the limited-overs formats of the game.
Having made his debut in 2001, the 34-year-old medium-pacer has acquired a wealth of experience in the T20 format of the game, having played for New Zealand, alongside his participation in T20 leagues. Oram is currently a veteran of 124 T20s with 86 wickets,
and is still going strong, judging by his recent stats.
In addition to having been affiliated with two Indian Premier League franchises - Chennai Super Kings and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajasthan-c837 Royals – Oram was selected last minute to be part of Uva Next’s campaign during the inaugural edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League earlier
this year, after national teammate http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JEC-Franklin-c1684 bowed out.
“One of the reasons I wanted to come here was that it's the perfect preparation for the World Twenty20,” Oram had said after his inclusion in the Uva Next squad. Selected rather reluctantly, owing to his age, and fragile form, Oram went on to prove doubters
and naysayers wrong, and dominated as the spearhead of Uva Next’s bowling attack, finishing as their top-wicket-taker, with 11 scalps at an unbelievably parsimonious economy rate of 3.82.
The experience in Sri Lanka came in handy for both the team (which skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LRPL-Taylor-c1849 claimed benefitted from Oram’s observations from the SLPL) and Oram himself, who then went on to finish the World T20 as New Zealand’s second-highest wicket-taker, with
5 scalps from 4 matches to his credit. Having put forth strong performances of late, the Kiwis will be hoping Oram continues in a similar vein as they tackle Sri Lanka in the Only T20 at Pallekele.
Ronnie Hira
Having been selected for the Sri Lanka tour on the basis of his recent impressive development as a player, according to the NZC’s national selection manager Kim Littlejohn, Ronnie Hira will be providing New Zealand’s bowling attack some much-needed spin
quotient in Sri Lanka.
“http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-McDonald-c1042 Hira and Adam Milne have been included in the ODI squad having previously being selected in T20 sides,” said Littlejohn. “We have been impressed by the development of both players and they offer the side something a bit different.”
A left-arm slow bowler, Hira has played a total of 65 T20s, and has 56 scalps to his credit. While he hasn’t exactly impressed with his performances for the team in the T20 format earlier this year, the 25-year-old claimed 1 for 24 in the only match he played
during the World T20 in Sri Lanka, and registered the best economy rate by a New Zealand bowler – 6.00.
That, coupled with his recent performances for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, during which he has taken 6 wickets in the 5 matches he has played for the team, suggest that Hira has a vital role to play for New Zealand
in Sri Lanka.
