Sri Lanka finally had something to cheer about in the opening session of day 2 after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KS-Williamson-c1813 to halt New Zealand at 298 for 5 on lunch, at the P Sara Oval, November
26, 2012.
The hosts were frustrated for the best part of the opening day following an initial burst, where seamers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BB-McCullum-c1129 respectively.
However, the tourists recovered well, courtesy http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 and Williamson, both of whom shared an unbeaten stand to end the opening day strongly at 223 for 2.
The second day’s proceedings again began on a watchful note as both men seemed content on building from their overnight momentum. Taylor, who had already notched up his century, weathered out the second new ball threat confidently, but fell to the spin of
Herath.
The left-arm spinner wasn’t allowed to emulate his showings of the Galle Test but still managed to provide his side with a much needed breakthrough when he caught the Kiwi skipper plumb in front, who failed to execute a sweep shot. Nonetheless, his knock
of 142 offered his side much-needed respite following their embarrassing capitulation at Galle.
Williamson, meanwhile, showcased his Test credentials with a ton of his own. Having resumed the day from 95, he reached the three-figure mark with an unconvincing boundary off Eranga and in due course notched up 1000 runs in Test cricket. It was his third
career century, and the second in the sub-continent, having amassed a hundred on debut two years ago.
He went about his business in his usual way, accumulating largely in singles, and hitting the occasional boundary. After taking 9 off a Tillakaratne Dilshan’s over, he was finally dismissed by Herath for 135, with sweep also paving for his demise.
Dilshan then cleaned up wicket-keeper batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kruger-van-Wyk-c1811, in the very next over, leaving the Kiwis at 291 for 5. The batting side added a cautious seven more to their total before umpires made the call for lunch.
