Sri Lanka vs West Indies - 2nd Test: Bad light forces a draw
Sri Lanka’s spinners led by Rangana Herath heralded an outstanding performance as West Indies drew the second Test against Sri Lanka on Saturday. Herath picked up three wickets after dismissing Dwayne Bravo, Suleiman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Carlton-Baugh-c49264 to dismiss West
Indies for 243 in reply to Sri Lanka’s impressive 387 – 9 declared.
Sri Lanka declared their second innings on 57 – 1 with opener Tharanga Paranavitana scoring 20 not out from the hosts’ side. The other opener, Tillekeratne Dilshan was the only batsman to get out in the second innings of Sri Lanka when he was caught behind
off Dwayne Bravo’s bowling. He scored 26 runs.
West Indies were then sent in to bat and to achieve a highly improbably target of 202 runs in just 21 overs. They soon found themselves in trouble as they lost both their openers, Chris Gayle and Adrian Barath, for scores of 3 and 8 respectively before bad
light made any further play impossible. Spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Barath-c42094 LBW, while part timer Dilshan had Gayle caught in the slips by former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawerdene. West
Indies' final score was 12 – 2.
The three match Test series is now tied at 0 – 0 after the two drawn matches at Galle and Colombo with one last Test remaining which will start in Pallekele on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the West Indian wicketkeeper batsman Adrian Baugh struck his second half century of the tour to allow West Indies to avoid the follow on. Resuming the day on 165 – 5 during the afternoon session as no play was possible due to rain in
the morning, West Indies needed 23 runs to avoid the follow on with 5 wickets in hand. Dwayne Bravo played some fine shots as he bashed Lakmal for a four before hitting Herath for a four and a six in the same over.
However, Herath got even as he dismissed Bravo in the next over, but not before Bravo had added 44 runs with Baugh to the final tally. West Indies then lost 3 wickets in the space of four runs. They slipped from 205 – 5 to 209 – 8. Herath took two wickets
while debutant Suranga Lakmal took one. Adrian Baugh survived a few scares thanks largely to the review system that is being used in the Test series. He was given LBW when he was on 4 and 21 off the bowling of Mendis and Herath respectively, however on both
occasions he successfully appealed against the umpire’s decision using the review system. Sammy, who got out for a duck in the Galle Test, could not make any inroads in the Sri Lankan bowling line-up again, as he got out for 2. He was caught by Angelo Matthews
off the bowling of Lakmal.
Kumar Sangakkara was adjudged Man of the Match after his superb 150 in the first innings. However, his disappointment was apparent as he stated that playing at least 4 days might have led to an all together different outcome of the match.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 now move onto Pallekele where the third and final Test match of the series will be played from Wednesday. Both teams are expected to retain the same players for the final eleven who played in the second Test match.
