Sri Lanka wins bronze in Zonal AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup – Volleyball news
The Central Zonal tournament for men of the AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup recently saw the Sri Lankan squad compete with the duo from India.
The two teams were playing each other for the bronze medal in the tournament. The zonal championship was being staged in Sri Lanka, with the city of Negombo playing the host.
The two teams that competed in the final of the zonal championship were that of Iran as well as Kazakhstan. After some hard fought and gruelling matches, the team that was able to own the top spot turned out to be that of Iran with Kazakhstan coming as runners
up.
On the other hand, the two contestants for the bronze medal battled fought each other in what proved to be a one sided affair as the Sri Lankans were able to earn a win over the duos from India in each of the four matches that were played. Not only did the
Sri Lankan duos secure themselves wins in the four matches, they won each of the game by making a clean sweep over their opponents.
The first match in this series that started the sweeping tradition by the Sri Lankans was played between the Sri Lankan squad of Pubudu Ekanayake/ Sampath Peiris and the Indian pair of S.Balaganesh/ G. Prabhakaran. The match between the two sides did not
take long to reach is close as the home team was able to seal the deal on their opponents at the following final set scores: 21-12 and 21-8.
The top three teams of the zonal tournament have also earned the additional honour of moving to the final round where other zonal qualifiers will also be making a show of their skills. The other zones that are included in the championship are Eastern, South
eastern, Western and Oceania Zone.
The top teams of the final round of the championship will be earning a ticket into the London 2012 Olympic Games that are scheduled to be held on July 27. It will be the third time that the city of London will be playing host to the Games in its history.
