Sri Lankan Bakeer Ganes hired as Temple University women’s volleyball team head coach
The decision was unveiled on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 that Bakeer Ganes will coach Temple University women’s volleyball team in 2011 season.
Previously, Ganes served as the assistant coach at West Virginia University for five years and before that, he was attached with Cedar Valley College in Grand Prairie, Texas for one year.
Sri Lanka is the birthplace of Ganes but he moved to Germany at the tender age of 5. He started playing volleyball at age nine and competed at various German clubs from 1990-2000.
Ganes is a Queens College graduate and he also played volleyball at university level while pursing his degree.
Alongside playing, he developed an interest in teaching volleyball. He opted for the coaching profession after receiving his master’s degree in athletic coach education in 2007 from West Virginia University.
Since he has accepted the highly influential post of mentor of Temple University volleyball team, he will be responsible for leading his team to success. He will supervise the training and practice sessions, and recruiting of players in the team. Ganes has
vast experience of the sport and he will surely define a new dimension for his team.
The Athletic Director of Temple University, Bill Bradshaw had his say about the decision.
He stated, "Bakeer Ganes is a perfect fit for our women's volleyball program. He really distinguished himself in our search process as someone capable of taking the program in the right direction, and brings to us a wealth of successful Division I experience.
We are excited about the potential of our volleyball team to return to a regional and national level, and believe that Bake is committed to overall excellence and the welfare of our student-athletes".
Ganes was more than happy to take the role of women’s volleyball head coach at Temple University.
He expressed his thoughts: "I am honored to accept the position of head volleyball coach at Temple. I'm very grateful for this fantastic opportunity and I would like to thank Bill Bradshaw, Kristen Foley and the rest of the search committee for giving me
the chance to be a part of such a prestigious athletic department and fine university. The administration has demonstrated their commitment to success and I can't wait to get started and work together to achieve our goals. I am looking forward to being a part
