Sri Lankan Premier League taking off this June
Cricket never stops in the Subcontinent. The Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) is all ready to sprout from the ashes of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The 7-team SLPL tournament will commence in the month of July and last for 18 days. The squads for the event are yet to be announced by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Cricket (SLC).
Unlike the IPL, it will be an inter-provincial tournament. Seven teams will represent seven provinces of the country. The format of the tournament is designed as such since SLC does not have enough resources to hold auctions for so many overseas players. However, some international players will be called in for the tournament.
The seven participating provinces will be, Basnahira, Kandurata, Nagenahira, Ruhuna, Uthura, Uva and Wayamba.
It will be a Twenty20 tournament in which seven teams will play one match each and the top four will qualify for the Semi-Finals.
The winner of the tournament will qualify for the Champions League T20. All matches of the tournament will be played at the Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
In order to spark interest amongst the public, the SLC has decided to allot the domestic players their home provinces. In this way the teams will have local support and more spectators are likely to turn up for the matches.
The squad size will be between 16 and 18. Each squad will have at least seven domestic and a maximum of four international players while one domestic player has to be from the Under-21 team.
Every team will have the right to choose a former Sri Lankan player as mentor or coach.
SLC’s selection committee will assign the international players to every squad according to its needs. There will be no open auction like the IPL and the teams will not have freedom to select players at their own discretion.
The international players that are likely to take part in the tournament include Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gibbs-c60021 and Kevin O’Brien.
The trend, that IPL has founded, will be forwarded by the SLPL. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 is also planning to design and organise a premier league Twenty20 tournament in collaboration with UAE.
