Sri Lanka’s mainstream all-rounder Angelo Mathews has regained fitness and has been included in the national ODI side which is currently on tour of England.
The only thing which is surprising is that Matthews has been overlooked by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as they handed vice-captaincy to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SHT-Kandamby-c2522 ahead of the all-rounder.
Mathews has always been tagged as the most likely candidate to be the deputy of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691, who was appointed as captain of Lankan team.
SLC chief selector http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Russell-c87177 Arnold, former Sri Lankan cricketer, states that the all-rounder would have been injured that’s why they opted for Kandamby.
Arnold said, “Angelo would have been the obvious choice, but at this stage he is not 100% fit.”
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Henry-Childs-c68031 Austin, Mathews’ agent beg to differ from Arnold’s view. The agent revealed that the all-rounder has attained fitness from the knee injury that forced him out of World Cup final and is match fit. The agent clarified
that the all-rounder is fit to bat but will take his time before he starts bowling again.
Austin said, “Mathews is fully fit to play as a batsman and fielder, having recovered from the Grade-2 quad strain he sustained in the World Cup. During his recovery period, he also travelled to Melbourne to get some treatment
on a long-standing knee problem from surgeon Dr. David Young.”
He further expressed, “That injury is also now much better, but given a hectic schedule this year he’s not going to rush back into bowling full-time, until everything is 100% OK.”
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 has entered its second phase. The visitors lost the Test series 1-0 and will be looking to bounce back in the ODI and Twenty20 as certain key players rejoin the squad.
Both teams will face each other on Saturday, June 25 in one only Twenty20 match. The ODI series will begin from June 28. They have started well by defeating county side http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Worcestershire-c866 in tour match and will be hoping to continue
on the winning run.
Sri Lanka ODI and Twenty20 squad:
