Sri Lankan bowler Chaminda Vaas contemplates retirement from international cricket
Sri Lanka’s veteran cricketer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chaminda-Vaas-c1223 has acknowledged he is considering retirement from international cricket after he was left out of Sri Lanka’s 15-man World Cup squad. Vaas had previously stated that he was aiming to
play in the World Cup and was also included in the preliminary 30-man squad.
On his elimination, Vaas said, “I tried my best, but my performances have not been good enough to get me selected. I wish the team very good luck and hope they bring the World Cup back to Sri Lanka again. I haven't finally decided,
but I will make my mind up after the World Cup whether to retire from international matches."
Vaas will celebrate his 37th birthday in two weeks time. The exclusion of the ageing star is widely being regarded as a bold but correct decision. Even though he has been performing well in the domestic One-Dayers, it
is remarked that the player might just be past his prime to feature in an international match. Vaas was also not offered a contract in the IPL auction last weekend, despite putting in some match-winning performances for the Deccan Chargers in 2010.
Along with Vaas, the Sri Lankan selection committee has opted to leave out one of the country’s most successful batsmen Sanath Jayasuriya. Ironically, the selection committee is headed by arguably Sri Lanka’s best ever batsman
Aravinda de Silva. All three players Vaas, Jayasuriya and De Silva featured in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758’s 1996 World Cup triumph.
The current World Cup squad contains only one survival from the 1996 World Cup team in Muttiah Muralitharan. The player has already retired from Test cricket but has continued to be part of the One-Day International (ODI) team.
Vaas and Jayasuriya have also announced their retirement from the five day version of the game but continued to remain eligible for selection in limited-over cricket. However, Vaas has not played an ODI since August 2008 and Jayasuriya
last featured in an ODI in December 2009.
The World Cup begins from the 19th of February, and is jointly hosted by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747. The Sri Lankan team is being led by wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara and the country, being a co-host of
the tournament, will surely be a force to be reckoned with.
Sri Lanka World Cup squad: Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara,
Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ajantha-c42419 Mendis, Rangana Herath.
