Sri Lankan management rest Rangana Herath from the remaining ODIs – Cricket News Update
Sri Lankan management have decided to rest http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sajeewa-Weerakoon-c87976.
The decision was taken keeping in mind the player’s condition, who recently made a return to the side following a knee operation at the conclusion of the previous home series against England. Herath had asserted himself as the first choice for the Lankans
since the retirement of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/M-Muralitharan-c1864 and had featured in almost every series since the World Cup 2011.
2012 further saw him establish himself in the limited-over side where he featured heavily for the team’s bout Down Under. He however, was omitted from the team’s Asia Cup campaign in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 and his absence was duly felt, with the team failing to win
any of their matches.
The 34-year-old was included for the series against the no.1 ranked side http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 and also featured in the first two ODIs against the Men in Green, bowling a total of 16 overs at an economy rate of under 4. However, with an important Test series to follow,
the management is keen to given their premier spinner added time to recuperate himself from the operation, excluding him from the remaining three ODI games as confirmed by the Lankan skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397.
"We had decided that he would play only two to three games in this series because it's always tough to return after an operation," Mahala Jayawardene, said on the eve of the third ODI in Colombo.
"He felt it sore in the first two games. If you noticed while fielding he was struggling a bit. After speaking to the selectors and the medical team we felt it was best he got some rest before the Test series. We needed to make sure we manage him well after
his operation."
His replacement is another 34-year-old Weerakoon, who is a veteran in the Sri Lankan domestic cricket having played in 161 first-class matches, along with 126 List A games. Jayawardene said that the left-arm spinner deserved a call up.
"Personally I feel he is a deserving candidate and hopefully he will get his opportunity tomorrow," Jayawardene added.
