Sri Lankan sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage terms the theft of financial data as an inside job
Commenting on the theft of two hard drives from the office of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Cricket, Sports Minister, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, has expressed his belief about the theft to be an inside job.
The 10th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup was co-hosted by Sri Lanka, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747. Reportedly, SLC landed in serious problems after incurring huge financial expenses during the preparations for the mega event.
Cricket Sri Lanka had to spend huge amounts of money on repair and construction of new cricket stadiums. Recently the board has been looking forward to a government http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Grant-c60671 to bail it out of the financial crunch.
The financial records and reports were saved in the two computers, whose hard drives were stolen over the weekend. The theft was not reported until Monday morning.
The country’s cricket authority registered the case at the local police station and the law-enforcement agencies are investigating the matter.
The Lankan sports minister, who recently came under heavy criticism following his strategy regarding the return of Lankan players from Indian Premier League (IPL), held the board officials responsible for the theft and termed it as an ‘inside job’.
"It has to be an inside job. A robot didn`t come and steal the hard disks," Aluthgamage said. "Sri Lanka Cricket had backed up the data and we don`t need to worry about losing the information," added the sports minister.
The director of SLC’s World Cup section, Suraj Dandeniya, has already has also hinted towards the employees working in the office. He shared that the removal of hard disks is a technical job and an ordinary thief was unlikely to be involved.
The stolen data contains the details of SLC’s budget deficit because of massive expenditures during the World Cup. The construction of new stadiums and the dispute between International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) and SLC over the issue of hosting fee are considered
as the prime reasons behind the financial crisis.
SLC spent 69 million dollars in World Cup arrangements and the cricket body is currently looking to get a huge grant from the government to put the matters back on the right track.
"Sri Lanka Cricket ran out of funds after hosting the World Cup and sought government help to settle some payments," described the minister.
SLC will have present audit reports to government in order to get a loan and the audited documents were also the part of the data which was stolen from the office.
