Sri Lanka’s Opposition leader Slams Sri Lanka Cricket
Ranil Wickremesinghe, the opposition leader of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 has criticized Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for its mismanagement and has urged the Sri Lankan parliament to form a proper body to run the cricketing affairs in the Island.
Speaking to newsmen, Wickremesinghe said, “I propose the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to seek the views of all parties. This is an entity registered as a business venture. Certain individuals gain positions to make money, while another
section tries to use political influences to acquire positions in the cricket administration.”
He was also critical towards SLC for its lavish spending during the ICC World Cup 2011, which was jointly hosted by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747. According to reports, the SLC, after the mega event requested the government to provide financial assistance
since the cricketing body had suffered financial losses because of spending excessive money for preparing facilities for the Global event.
“When the estimated spending for the World Cup was for LKR1200 million, how did they end up spending LKR2400 million?” Wickremesinghe argued.
The flamboyant politician pointed out that SLC was being politically influenced since 2005, which had hurt the game in the country. According to him, political influence had caused deterioration in the performance of the players.
Last month, International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) had made it mandatory for member boards to eliminate political interference in the cricketing bodies by 2012. This means that the working staff and managerial authorities should not be appointed by the governments
but instead the boards need to hold elections to appoint personnel on different posts within the cricket boards.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has promised free and fair election next year which will mark an end to political interference in SLC.
Earlier this year, the SLC was criticised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for lagging behind in preparing venues for the World Cup. However, during the mega event the facilities were noted to be excellent and up to speed.
The home team also did phenomenally well as the Lankans reached the final of the tournament, where they lost to a belligerent Indian side which won the World Cup for the second time in their history.
After the mega tournament, Sri Lankan skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pinnaduwage-Aravinda-de-Silva-c82298 also presented
its resignation.
