Sri Lanka’s interim coach Stuart Law feels players can’t ignore lucrative IPL – Cricket News
Sri Lanka’s interim coach, Stuart Law, believes that the cricketers cannot resist the lucrative Indian Premier League since there is so much money involved in the competition.
Expressing his sympathy with Lasith Malinga’s decision to quit Tests, Law said that he does not have any grudges over the fast bowler’s choice to quit Tests and continue playing in IPL, despite his worsening knee condition. The Lankan coach made it clear
that the IPL has made it extremely tough for players to carry on with international cricket.
Law, said, ''I think [better pay] will arrive one day but right now it is difficult to attract the players to continue to play international cricket when they can go to the IPL for six weeks and earn five years' money.''
The Lankan coach added, “It’s a tough one for the players because we’re not talking about 10,000 dollars here and there. We’re talking about a million dollars,”
After making himself unavailable for the upcoming tour of England, Malinga announced his retirement because of a long-standing injury in his right knee. However, the paceman has continued to play for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians in the IPL. The coach termed Malinga's
decision of not playing in the longer version of the game as a disappointment for the Sri Lankan team.
After Trevor Bayliss’ decision to leave the post, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Cricket (SLC) had appointed Law as the Sri Lankan National team’s coach, who had been assisting Bayliss since 2009.
Responding to a question about the newly-appointed Sri Lankan skipper, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Law said, “Sri Lanka will go through a rebuilding phase now, but the amount of talent that is yet to play international cricket at this stage is amazing.”
While expressing his excitement about rebuilding the Lankan team for future, Law cited the upcoming England tour as a huge opportunity for younger players to prove their worth at international level.
The Sri Lankan side is scheduled to play three Test matches and five One-day Internationals against England. The first Test will start from May 26 and the Lankan players, who are participating in the ongoing IPL, will move to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 by May 19, 2011.
