Srikkanth backs Indian selectors’ decision to retain spin trio for Kolkata Test – Cricket News Update
Former BCCI chairman of selectors http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Roger-Kirshaw-Pierson-c42135 to three spinners going into the third Test of the four-match series against England, starting in Kolkata on Wednesday, December 5, 2012.
Indian selectors yesterday named an unchanged 15-man squad from the ten-wicket crushing in Mumbai for the crucial Kolkata Test, retaining the spin trio of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Ashwin-c2228 and under pressure off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.
The trio was thrashed all over the park by centurions http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KP-Pietersen-c1806 (186) on a spin friendly Wankhede wicket. The mauling earned the spinners a lot of criticism from the Indian cricketing fraternity, with many suggesting that the selectors should include a leg-spinner in the side ahead of the third Test.
Srikkanth, however, said that a player should not be dropped from the side on the basis of one poor performance, adding that the trio should be given a fair run to prove its prowess.
"Having a leg-spinner in the squad is always great. But you cannot drop a player on the basis of just one match. They have to be given a fair run," the former BCCI selection committee chairman told a TV channel.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harbhajan-Singh-c61453 had just come back after one year in wilderness. We cannot just drop him after effectively just one innings," he added further.
Srikkanth, the former Indian skipper, also backed the selectors for retaining the same squad for the Kolkata Test, despite a humiliating ten-wicket crushing in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820, saying one cannot chop and change the squad on the basis of one bad result.
He, however, reckoned that the selectors’ move to announce the squad for only the 3rd Test, and not the 4th, will serve as a warning for all.
"Some people are under scanner if I may say so. I don't know who are they. It will depend on the result of the third Test in Kolkata," Srikkanth said. "If something goes wrong in Kolkata and some players do not perform I guess there could be problems for these players," he added.
The four-Test series is currently levelled 1-1, after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 bounced back with a ten-wicket victory.
