Question:

Srum surname information?

Does anyone know where the Srum surname originated from? There are only a few descendents still living. We can trace it back to Arkansas but then nothing. Some suppose it could be originally spelled Schramm which then turned to Shrum and then Srum but I have not found proof of that.

  1. You missed this one out !

Schrum : Last name origin & meaning:

Perhaps an altered spelling of German Schromm, a variant of Schramm, or, in eastern Germany, a habitational name from a place named Schrom, near Breslau.

The only way to prove where the name originated, or rather the family of the person with that name today, is to trace the family lineage, probably not easy but it is the only answer, you cannot start with a name that probably dates back 700 years, even if you know exactly what it is/was and work down to today.

  2. I took a glance at the 1860 census for St Francis co, Arkansas, which seems to be the "core" area.  Jonas is there, his birth is ABOUT 1813, in North Carolina.  The oldest child in the home, age 19, is born in Arkansas.. telling you that the family has been there since prior to 1841.

The same index (through rootsweb) does have many people with the spelling, who are still in NC.  By 1880, I find a major group with Srumb, who are in Tenn.  NC to Tenn to Arkansas is a pretty common pattern of migration.

Your best bet is to work with the persons that you know. If you can post a "recent" (early 1900s) family group in Arkansas.. then it is very possible to look at the pattern, and match them up to earlier censuses, even with the spelling variations.

If you don't have your email 'open' in your profile, you may want to do that.  I'll try to do some checking on this later..if your email is not enabled, people can't reach you later on. It is safe..it goes through a 'filter' so people can't reach you on regular mail, unless you choose.

    edit

I wager around here all the time.. this time, my money is going to Lincoln county, North Carolina.
