Question:

St. Augustine surf fishing?

I have a few surf rod set ups (fairly old, but some new line and they will be ready to go) and would like to know some good fishing spots and techniques for fishing from shore. I always fished with heavy pyramid weights and two hooks with frozen shrimp for bait. I am new to the area, so a decent list of what I can expect to catch (realistically) would also be helpful. Thanks a lot!!

  1. The surf fishing in that area is good, use sand fleas for pompano, you can get pompano rigs at just about any tackle store down there.  Whiting and blue fish are commonly caught in the surf there too, for whiting use fresh shrimp on a fish finder rig, for blue fish, use a fishfinder rig with a wire leader and use frozen finger mullet or cut mullet.  Spanish mackeral are caught there too, cast various lures or use the bluefish rig talked about earlier with finger mullet.  If you catch pompano (the king of the florida surf fish) keep the head on when you clean him there is a gland in its head that makes it taste superb when you cook it.  Get you a sand flea rake and look for them in the surf (mole crabs is another name) put them on your hook and cast to where there are washes or cuts in the sand bars, whereever there is a trough you will catch them. Match your pyramid sinker to the surf, rougher surf, bigger weight.  Good luck.

  2. my parents live on the "island" when I visit I fish the ICW and I also fish a bridge that is on the way to Marineland... go into town (on the island) and just head south a few miles there is a bridge there with a lot of current we've done well there catching all kinds of fish - never the same thing more than once....lost a few big ones too.

Recommend usingfire-linee or some other good braided line. Was down there last year and had some fun...don't remember the name of thatrestaurantt owned by some bikers it's on the corner - always packed but always good food too.

I've used shrimp and whole squid too (frozen let it defrost)

  3. If your looking for good surf fishing in the area, go an hour south to Ponce Inlet, if your just looking for good all around fishing, hit the intercoastal waterway there, flounder, redfish, trout, shark, rays, and a number of other fish are common there in the intercoastal, I live in NY now, but used to live in Daytona, excellant fishing there, drop me an e-mail if your looking for something specific, I'd be happy to share some of my old hotspots with you
