St. Helens’ grabs third victory over Catalan Dragons: Engage Super League – Rugby news
St. Helens emerged as winners over Catalan Dragons on Friday, July 15, with a final score break-up of 40-18 at Stadium Stobart.
With this victory, the Saints have now moved up to the third spot on the Engage Super League tables. This will be marked as the Dragons’ third defeat in fifteen matches against the Saints. On the other hand, the French club Dragons is currently sitting on the fifth spot in the league rankings. If they had won against St. Helens, they too would be sitting pretty in the third spot.
Jamie Foster of St Helens’ had a brilliant performance which included three tries along with eight goals to his credit. Without his outstanding play, victory for the Saints would not have been possible. Along with Foster, Michael Shenton and Francis Meli also contributed tries with Shenton’s two kicks.
Commenting on their victory after the match, Royce Simmons, the coach of St. Helens, stated, “We played a side that had won 11 of their last 13 so we're happy to win but we let in some soft tries. Jamie Foster's goalkicking was good and he's scoring some tries but you've got to give a bit of credit to Francis Meli. He gives him a nice little ball and, with his size and strength, he attracts the opposition to stay on him a bit.”
Remy Marginet of Dragons showed his weakness in kicking, with only one out of four attempts hitting the mark. Frederic Vaccari and Clint Greenshields of Dragons scored a try each where as Steve Menzies of bagged a couple for the French outfit.
Unhappy with his outfit’s performance, Trent Robinson, who coaches Catalan Dragons stated, “It was obviously closer than that but we deserved what we got in the end. There were some poor plays from us in that last 10 minutes. I thought we were better than we produced tonight, even though we were good enough to be in the hunt.”
It was also acknowledged by the French coach that Marginet possesses good goal kicking ability which he failed to exhibit during the encounter. If the case would have been otherwise, it could have placed more pressure on the winning squad.
