I have Bipolar and anxiety and take Paxil and Lamictal. Someone told me they have anxiety and started taking St. Johns Wort and within a week have had no anxiety whatsoever. Just wanted to ask someone before I talk to a doctor it they have any info on this.

  1. St John's wort does act as a mild antidepressant (have not heard of it being tested with anxiety) but the reason it isn't in 'mainstream' use by doctors etc is partly because it isn't that good but mainly because it interacts badly with lots of other medications. I.e. it can stop another medication working, or make it toxic. In particular, it can stop oral contraceptives from working properly. So if you have a diagnosed medical/psychiatric problem and are already on medication for that, I do not advise adding in St John's wort and certainly any extra things you are interested in taking should always be discussed with your doctor.

  2. there are no formal studies on the herb.  if you're meds aren't working, discuss options with your doctor.
