St. Joseph boys’ volleyball team defeats Pioneer Valley by 3-0 on Thursday
The St. Joseph boys’ volleyball team was able to defeat their rivals, the Pioneer Valley team by making a clean sweep over them on Thursday.
The win that was achieved by the Knights in their most recent match had more to do with the clumsy performance that the Panthers put up rather than a good one by the Knights. The match in which the Panthers put up such a sluggish performance was a part of
the PAC 7 League volleyball matches.
The two teams contested each other at the St. Joseph’s Hofschulte Gym, which gave the Knights the added advantage of playing in their home court.
Playing in their home court and against a team making several errors, the Knights did not have much of a hard time in handing out a defeat to the Panthers in three back to back sets. By the time that the Panthers were heading out of the court, nursing their
wounded pride as the Knights loud hoots of joy, the scoreboard summarised the match as 25-22, 25-12, 25-18.
When the first set of the match started, both the teams were determined to gain dominance of the court. Even as the set commenced, both the Knights and the Panthers remained neck to neck with each other. It was only in the later stages of the game that the
Knights were able to pull up ahead of the Panthers and take the first set of the game at 25-22.
The second set of the game saw the Panthers dwindle in their performance. The Knights took full advantage of the fact and stepped up their play, which increased the pressure on the already faltering Panthers more.
Both the attack and defence of the Knights seemed flawless as they kept on registering points on the score board and made it very difficult for the Panthers to score any of their own.
As a result, the Knights were able to win the second set of the match at 25-12.
After having lost the first two sets of the match, the Panthers decided to step up their play and give some competition to the Knights. The Panthers did not let the Knights get too comfortable as they remained close to St. Joseph all through. Unfortunately
for the Panthers, they were unable to seal the deal on the third set of the game which the Panthers took for their own at 25-18.
“Better communication has helped us with our court coverage,” said Tyler Kolbo, who is the sophomore outside hitter for the Knights. “Pioneer Valley beat us at the San Luis Obispo Tournament. We were pretty quiet on the court there and during the first part
of the season. We’re playing a lot smarter now, talking a lot more.”
