St Leger: Manchester United's Miachael Owen owned Brown Panther second across the wire
It was a pleasure for Brown Panther’s proud owner, Manchester United striker Michael Owen, to see his horse finish right behind Masked Marvel, the winner that day in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster.
The colt was in lead behind the winner to continue for the wire with a firm grip and not lose the runner up spot and let the chasing Sea Moon get hold of it. Conquering the runner up spot, he left sea Moon as the third with Seville fourth.
The confidence about the performance of the horse was almost staunch as the jockey has a blind folded believe on the training ability of Tom Dascombe who claimed that the horse was in top form.
"I'm very proud of him. I was always confident he would run well as Tom (Dascombe) had him in top form”, said Owen.
At another occasion Kieren Fallon confessed that the ground was not really ideal for Brown Panther and that he would race better with ‘more juice in the ground’.
"Kieren (Fallon) said he might have been feeling the ground a bit and he will be a better horse with more juice in the ground. He's a dream horse for me".
For Teddy Grimthorpe who is the racing manager for the owner of Sea Moon, Khalid Abdullah the things did not really turn out as they were planned and for the horse it was not the clearest of runs. Judging from the performance and its results, the connections
are considering recourse.
Their proposition stands to be that the horse should relapse to either a mile and a half or even 10 furlongs.
Aidan O’Brien’s horse, Seville did come across the distance issue too as it was quite long and he ended up losing a shoe in the race. However, according to the trainer, the horse no doubt did run really well.
Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s Census was fifth and had thrilled his connections as this was his chance to prove himself at the most significant race in the UK even if he stood fifth. The jockey, Richard Hughes went on saying:
"He would not let himself down as he had in previous races. That was our biggest worry at the end of the day. That will probably be it for this year and he will be a grand horse for next year."
The rest of the lot did achieve in its own way but Brown Panther’s runner up position was his way to go.
