St. Leger Stakes: Camelot’s chances of winning Triple Crown
The entire horseracing fraternity is anxiously waiting for September 15th – the day Doncaster will host this season’s St. Leger Stakes. All eyes are glued on Aidan O’Brien’s maverick colt, Camelot, who will try to become the first British Triple
Crown winner after Nijinsky in 1970.
Winning the ace title has always been a dream for every runner. Since the beginning of Triple Crown in 1853, only 15 horses have managed to taste success, and Camelot is on the verge of adding his name to the list.
Earlier this season, the 3-year-old won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Investec Derby at Epsom to make himself the red hot favourite for the big title. The Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes has attracted a star-studded line-up, including Astrology,
Great Heavens, Imperial Monarch, Main Sequence any many other powerful runners.
Nevertheless, Camelot’s connections have the best chance of lifting the trophy. The Derrick Smith-owned has been unbeaten since the start of his career. After clinching two splendid victories last year, the son of Montjeu went on a long vacation.
Bred by Sheikh Abdulla Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, the dashing colt started off this season with a classy act in the Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes. After winning the Newmarket battle, the bay colt won the Investec Derby in a great fashion. The latest of his victories
was at Curragh, where he secured an outstanding win in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
In his five-race career, Camelot ran on different tracks, but always maintained the standards. In his sole outing at Doncaster last year, O’Brien’s charge was superb all the way through, winning the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy by two and a quarter lengths.
So, Doncaster’s conditions will not be a concern for the big horse.
Camelot is in such a great shape that there is no reason why he should not have a big run at Doncaster. An upset cannot be ruled out, but the stage is set for him to have a cracking performance.
Last year’s St. Leger Stakes produced a shocking result, when Masked Marvel beat Sir Michael Stoute’s 2-1 favourite, Sea Moon, to bag the big prize. O’Brien is making every possible effort to avoid any upset, but everyone will have to wait and see how Camelot
handles the situation.
