St. Louis Aces take down Sacramento Capitals to bag the Western Conference Championship – WTT 2011
After two hours and twenty two minutes of nail biting tennis, St. Louis Aces narrowly beat Sacramento Capitals in the WTT (World Team Tennis) Finals to take the Western Conference Championship title. The enthralling contest was
staged at Family Circle Tennis Center, on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina, with Aces wrapping up victory at 20-19 over Capitals on Saturday afternoon.
It was an amazing game of WTT, with Capitals winning three sets, yet losing in the matchup with their net score falling behind Aces by just one. After splitting the opening two sets between the two teams, Capitals went on to reel
off the next two sets to lead 16-15 in the contest. The fifth set made the all-important difference in the matchup, as Aces won it with the score of 5-3 to get into a one-point lead to register a memorable victory.
The contest ignited with Dusan Vemic from Capitals taking on Roman Borvanov of Aces in men’s singles encounter. Vemic proved superior to the bleak Borvanov, drowning him at 5-3 after registering one serve break to take his side
into lead early.
With a poor serve accuracy of 47 per cent, Tamira Paszek took down Vania King to bring the advantage back to Aces, getting his side into 8-6 lead. Paszek proved far too aggressive in the set and gave away no chances to her opponent
to settle in the game, quickly nailing two serve breaks to seal the set at 5-1.
Another momentum swing was witnessed in the third set, when the Capitals’ duo of Mark Knowles and Dusan Vemic came out firing at the Aces’ pair of Roman Borvanov and Jean-Julien Rojer to snatch back the advantage for their side.
One serve break proved sufficient for Knowles and Vemic to close out the set at 5-3, levelling the overall scores at 11-all.
Capitals kept their winning momentum in the fourth set as well, with the women’s pair of Yasmin Schnack and Vania King hunting down the Aces’ duo of Liezel Huber and Tamira Paszek to take their team to 16-15 lead. Schnack and King
wrapped up the fourth set at 5-4, after a trade of one serve break from both sides.
It all came down to the final set of the match, with the mixed-doubles pair of Jean-Julien Rojer and Lizel Huber from Aces needing to win the fifth with a two-game lead to bring home victory. They convincingly wrapped up the final
set at 5-3 by defeating the pair of King and Knowles, settling the final scores at 20-19, to register a hard fought victory for Aces.
