St. Louis Blues beat Chicago Blackhawks 3-1
St. Louis Blues’ replacement goalkeeper Ty Conklin stopped 25 shots and led his side to a 3-1 win over defending champions, Chicago Blackhawks.
The home team knew that if they wanted to get something out of the game, they would have to rattle the Hawks early on – which is exactly what they did. The visitors found it hard to settle against some brilliant attacking play by the Blues. Even
though the home team didn’t give them time and space to work, the Hawks managed to come up with a brilliant piece of play in the 19th minute to score the opening goal. Jake Dowell scored the goal from an absolute gem of a flick shot.
St. Louis Blues got a few more chances in the closing stages of the period but no further goals were scored. The period ended with the Chicago Blackhawks leading 1-0. During the first period the Chicago Blackhawks made seven goal attempts, while the St.
Louis Blues made 18 goal attempts.
The Blues’ continued with their strong attacking approach in the second period. The hosts were soon rewarded with an equaliser from Vladimir Sobotka in the fifth minute. The home team pressed on in search of more goals, but the Hawks goal
keeper was a brick wall from then onwards. With the scores level, the Chicago Blackhawks also attacked a few times in the period but they couldn’t take advantage of the chances. As the period ended the scores were level at 1-1, with the St. Louis Blues
making 13 goal attempts compared to Chicago’s eight.
The final period was evenly matched in terms of goal attempts made by each team, but the home team proved to be the more productive of the two teams. St. Louis Blues successfully scored in the fourth minute to take the lead through Brad
Boyes’s powerful strike. The home team then sealed the match in the 15th minute from a brilliant tip in shot by Brad Winchester. The match ended with the St. Louis Blues winning 3-1. Vladimir Sobotka was named the star selection of the match.
