St. Louis Blues defeat the Edmonton Oilers 5-0 in shutout performance – NHL Recap

The St. Louis Blues beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-0 in a shutout performance at the Rexall Place on Friday. The game was vital for both teams who are in the bottom of the Western Conference. The Blues still have a small chance of making it into the National
Hockey League play-off cut, but the Oilers are out of contention. The Blues comprehensively dominated the entire game. Ben Bishop, goal-keeper of the Blues was named the Player of the Game for his 39 saves.
The Blues despite the away disadvantage, made a great start to the game which saw them coming up with pin point passing and extravagant shooting. They put early pressure on the weak Oilers defence and scored in the third minute through Chris Stewart from
a well placed shot to get into the lead.
The Oilers stepped up their game and shots started to fly from everywhere on the ice. However, the Oilers were unable to find the back of the net. The Blues were on full defensive mode as the Oilers came up with some very strong goal scoring chances.
Catching the Oilers on a counter-attack in the 18th minute, the Blues scored once again during the power-play to double their lead. The goal was scored by Patrik Berglund from a simple tip-in shot. The period ended with the Blues leading 2-0 as
the Oilers made 17 goal attempts in the period and the Blues managed 9.
The second period saw the Blues starting strongly once again and they were able to capitalise from the start once again. The away-side was able to score in the fifth minute with Chris Stewart scoring once again during the power-play.
Both teams came up with a decent offence and defence. There were attacks during the period that were very well worked, but did not get the final touch. Despite a few good scoring chances for both teams, no goals were scored as the period ended with the Blues
leading 3-0. During the course of the period the Blues made 8 goal attempts, as the Oilers managed 9.
The Oilers were the stronger of the two teams in the period, as they fired as many as 17 goal attempts in the period, but they were unable to score any goals. The Blues scored two goals in succession to seal the game. The goals were scored in the 16th
and 18th minutes through Roman p***k and Matt D’Agostini respectively. The Blues managed to come up with just five goal attempts during the periods as they won the game 5-0 in the end.
