St. Louis Blues fire off late to snap Detroit Red Wings winning streak 2-1 -NHL Match Update
Just when Detroit thought they had taken control of the match, the St. Louis Blues made the rain with pucks all over the Red Wings net and made the deciding goal midway through the second period to win and snap their winning streak, 2-1, Tuesday night, November
15, 2011, at the sold-out Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States.
After some slow shooting in the first period by both teams, St. Louis shot 19 in the second period alone and another 11 shots in the final period while Detroit had only 22 attempts on Ben Elliott throughout the match.
Jimmy Howard faced 37 shots and still had a great performance by blocking 35 of them, but as the scoring halted after St. Louis crippled the Detroit offence in the first period, his hard work did not pay off in the end.
"I can't say enough about that effort", captain David Backes said, adding that it was tough to kill a major penalty awarded to their player after Detroit took the lead early on. "A five-minute major you have to kill against a Detroit power play can be a
death sentence".
Drew Miller potted the first for Detroit 6:07 into the inaugural period for his second of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and as Chris Stewart was booked with a 10 minute game misconduct, St. Louis played without a man for half
the period.
Matt D'Agostini surprisingly scored their first of the night when Detroit lost Jonathan Ericsson due to a minor penalty for interference, assuring the home crowd that they were not lacking.
One out of their 19 shots in the second paid off as Alexander Steen made the game-winner and tie-breaker for the Blues midway through the second 20 minute phase and succeeded in holding them off during the third and final period.
"I had two good scoring chances, and one went in", Steen said, talking about his game-winning shot. "I wasn't there in his vision and I kind of figured that's where his open man was, and I got lucky".
St. Louis will definitely be looking for a third straight win against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, while the Red Wings travel to San Jose to face-off against the Sharks on Thursday.
