St. Louis Blues hire Sergei Zubov as Hockey Operations Consultant -NHL Update
After St. Louis Blues lost president of hockey operations, John Davidson, over the offseason as he ultimately went on to join the Columbus Blue Jackets front office, the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise got a new face added to their staff as well by
hiring Sergei Zubov.
Zubov, a former NHL player who ended his career after playing 16 seasons in the North American major league and winning the Stanley Cup championship twice, is now a part of the St. Louis Blues as their new consultant for hockey operations.
"Sergei was a champion in the NHL and is well respected in our League and also in Europe," Blues general manager, Doug Armstrong, said, according to NHL.com. "We will rely heavily on his opinion and expertise as he monitors our European prospects."
This move is being seen, by experts, as one to fill the gap left by Davidson. While it may not fill it entirely, the veteran experience that Zubov posses will certainly give them something in that department until a new head is appointed.
Zubov was drafted by the New York Rangers as the 85th overall back in round-five of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. The native of Moscow, Russia, did not play in North America prior to being picked up by the Rangers, but participated with the Binghamton
Rangers in the American Hockey League (AHL), once joining the major league.
After three straight seasons with New York, Zubov went on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins, for a single hockey year, before becoming a permanent part of the Dallas Stars team and ending off his career with them following the 2008-2009 regular season.
He registered a career high of 71 points (13 goals, 58 assists) in 78 games played during the 2005-2006 regular season and boasts 1,068 games played in total with 152 goals, 619 assists for a total of 771 points.
Sergei Zubov also holds a special place in hockey due to being one of only five Russian-born players who have been able to play a 1,000 or more games during their career in the NHL.
It will be exciting to see how Sergei Zubov applies his expertise in hockey to the Blues advantage next time around.
