St. Louis Blues stun Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 with second straight victory -NHL Match Update
St. Louis, one of the few teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) which is actually working towards having a better run this season, stunned the strong Philadelphia Flyers team with a 4-2 victory Saturday night, October 22, at the sold-out Wells Fargo
Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
The Blues were expected to be fatigued from their overnight trip from facing the Los Angeles Kings only a day earlier and flew across the country encountering a Philadelphia crowd, but it did not faze the St. Louis team at all.
"St. Louis didn't appear to be tired", Philadelphia coach, Peter Laviolette, said.
They got off to a quick start as Kent Huskins scored his second 1:48 into the first followed T.J. Oshie midway through to take a commanding, 2-0, lead.
Philadelphia nearly gave away another goal as Maxime Talbot was penalised with less than three minutes remaining with a minor for holding, but the Flyers managed to kill it off.
Danny Briere answered back for Philadelphia 56 seconds into the second but it was Carlo Colaiacovo first goal of the season that really scored the match when he fired the puck past Flyers veteran goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov at the 15:36 mark.
Wayne Simmonds and Barret Jackman exchanged fists in the final 20 seconds of round-two, and were awarded with a five-minute major for fighting, forcing both teams to enter the final period without a player.
Matt Carle scored Philadelphia’s first power play goal of the match, giving hope to the home crowd of a late comeback but Matt D'Agostini took control of the puck when Scott Hartnell went out for cross checking and scored unassisted nearly a minute later
to secure the match in their favour.
Bryzgalov, who fell short on four attempts, blamed the loss on miscommunication between his teammates.
"We need to have three words and everybody has to know these words", Bryzgalov said. "Play it, leave it or over. Not, everybody comes up with his own words, like, 'I'll pick up,' or 'don't touch' or something like that. It needs to be a simple three words
so everybody understands everybody, and we're all on the same page. And then we won't have this problem in the future".
St. Louis hopes for a third straight victory against Vancouver when they face-off on Wednesday while Philadelphia is looking to snap its two-game losing streak against Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.
